Activists in Tiruch filed a petition of the Commissioner for Corporations by V. Saravanan, who was looking for an immediate action against the decrease in trees in the Green Park in Panjapur on the National highway Tiruchi-Madurai for the construction of the integrated vegetable market.
Proposers, C. Balasubramanian, advisor, district exnora; KC Neelamegham, Treasurer, Makkal Sakthi Iyyakam; and K. Sivakumar, Convenor, Treechy Lovers, questioned the need to allocate 22 acres of land in the Green Park for the construction of the market when government land was available to the required extent near the highway.
They remembered that the civic body had asked residents and non -governmental organizations to contribute to the creation of a green park about 25 years ago as a recreational space. Many individuals and organizations, including Exnora, responded to the challenge. However, the announcement of the construction of the market on the same site came as a shock, the petition said.
“It is daunting to know that hundreds of trees will be reduced for market development. Although the civic body has proposed to move trees, it is quite impossible and expensive,” Neelamegham said.
Activists pointed out that the civic body spent a considerable amount on the construction of the market complex in the calluku, which remains unused.
They said the park would be for the upcoming integrated bus terminal in Panjapur “with a healthy zone of oxygen buffer” and urged officials to find an alternative place for the market instead of destroying the park.
The District Administration was filed a petition.
