About 500 workers at the Samsung factory sat in protest against the suspension of three employees, and the company deployed contract workers to fill the gap, two sources said.
This is the second major labor dispute in less than six months, at the Sriperumbudur factory near Chennai, which manufactures refrigerators, TVs and washing machines, accounting for $12 billion (about Rs 105.2 billion) sold in India One-third 2022-23. The plant employs about 1,800 workers.
“Most of our workers remain committed to ensuring normal business operations continue,” Samsung said in a statement.
Two sources with direct knowledge say that there is no production impact now as Samsung brings contract workers to manage the situation, while workers boycott jobs sitting inside the facility and refusing to be annoying.
The union objected to the account, saying there were some disruptions, especially in the manufacturing sector for refrigerators.
Last year, hundreds of people went on a five-week strike at the factory, seeking higher wages and union recognition. The strike ended in October after Samsung agreed to resolve workers’ demands.
A. Soundararajan, leader of the Samsung India union, said the protests would continue as workers were suspended and not heard because they stood outside the office of the company’s government and made a request.
“The discussion with the government is already underway,” he said, and the Tamil Nadu government did not respond to a request for comment.
Samsung said workers “will take appropriate disciplinary action after a formal investigation and have been suspended to protect the working environment and other workers.” It does not specify the reason for the pause.
“We continue to work hard to reach collective agreements with workers to resolve these issues and to this end, we remain open to the dialogue promoted by the government,” Samsung statement said.
