Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana on Saturday (October 3, 2026) accused his party leadership and the Punjab government of not addressing the problem of teacher shortage in some government schools in his constituency.
However, the AAP rejected Mr Maiserkhan’s claims and suspended him from the party for alleged “anti-party activities and indiscipline”.
Earlier on his Facebook page, Mr. Maiserkhana, MLA from Maura in Punjab’s Bathinda, said he took to social media after he was fed up of not being able to resolve his grievance regarding shortage of teachers.
Seeking to dispute her party’s claims regarding achievements in school education under the AAP government in Punjab, the MLA claimed that the situation at the ground level was the opposite.
The AAP MLA, who became emotional, said his son is also studying in the government School of Eminence, which is also facing shortage of teachers. He claimed that among the ruling party legislators, he is the only MLA whose children study in a government school.
“After the grief, I am going alive. I kept demanding the filling up of teaching posts but it has not happened yet,” the AAP MLA said as he leveled allegations against his party’s own government.
The MLA claimed that after he raised this issue with the party leadership, he was told that the Chief Minister had called him.
“But he didn’t meet me,” he claimed. “How long will I tolerate? What did I do wrong on the side?” he said.
The AAP MLA said he knew he would be denied a ticket for the upcoming elections. “But I will continue to fight for the people,” he said.
The lawmaker said he had taken his complaint to the party high command but there was no solution. “Tell me where I’m going wrong,” he asked.
He expressed apprehension that an FIR may be lodged against him.
The MLA said the school principal told his son to ask his father to replenish the teaching force.
“My fight is for the schools. If nothing is done in the schools, what will one do with such an education?” he asked.
“Among all the MLAs, only my children are studying in a government school,” he said.
Following the MLA’s outburst, AAP Punjab General Secretary Harchand Singh Barsat said that Mr Maiserkhana was suspended with immediate effect.
“The party has come to know that you have been found involved in anti-party activities and indiscipline. In view of the above, your primary membership of the party is suspended with immediate effect,” Mr Barsat said.
Citing the AAP MLA’s statement, the BJP’s Punjab unit said his plight “broke the narrative of an ‘education revolution'” by the ruling party in the state.
“The sitting AAP MLA, Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana, says he has repeatedly raised basic issues such as school repairs and teacher appointments, but no one listened.
“Now he says that despite being a sitting MLA of the ruling party, he can’t even arrange a meeting with the Chief Minister. If an ‘Aam Aadmi’ MLA can’t even meet his own Chief Minister, then what does that say about the common people who are trying to be heard?” Congress chief Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said this.
