
The Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, in collaboration with The Hindu, has launched an initiative called ‘Biotechnology: Role in Industry 5.0 – Sustainable Future Pathways’ to explore the expanding role of biotechnology in the Industry 5.0 environment, which emphasizes human-centric innovation, sustainability and technological integration.
As biotechnology continues to drive advances in healthcare, agriculture, environmental solutions and research-led innovation, the initiative seeks to create greater awareness of its societal impact while positioning it as a dynamic and future-ready career domain.
As part of this ongoing initiative, the second webinar in the series, “Biotechnology Education: Skills and Opportunities for a Sustainable Future,” will focus on how education and skills development in biotechnology is evolving to meet these emerging demands.
The second webinar will be held on February 8, 2026 from 11:30 a.m. The meeting will bring together experts from academia, international education and research to discuss how biotechnology education is evolving to meet the demands of a sustainable, innovation-based future.
The webinar will be presented by G. Jayaram, Professor and Dean, School of Bio Sciences and Technology, Vit Chennai; POJA SHIVANAND BREH, Environmental and Biological Sciences Program, Faculty of Science, University of Brunei Darusam, Brunei; KS Nagabhushana, Director – Research, Prayoga Institute of Education Research, Bengaruru; and Jayanthiti Velayedhan, Project Postdoctoral Fellow and Graduate, Vit. The discussion will be moderated by journalist soma basu.
Discussions will focus on the skills and competencies required for future biotechnology professionals, alignment of academic curricula with industry and sustainability goals, interdisciplinary educational pathways, and opportunities in research and higher education at national and global levels. Drawing on multiple perspectives, the session aims to provide attendees with a clearer understanding of how biotechnology education can enable meaningful careers while addressing real-world challenges.
