In an effort to improve waste management procedures, Tiruchi City Corporation has taken steps to create a race for recycling of poultry and seafood in the backyard of Ariyamangalam.
On average, the city generates about 30 to 40 tons of poultry, meat and seafood every day and the figure rises to 50 tons on weekends. Currently, it is collected and processed by a recycling company based on Tirunelvel and processes poultry and seafood waste.
Given that the recycling company faced controversy due to illegal dumping of medical waste, it faces challenges to operate the unit to delay the collection. As a solution, the civic body decided to allow the agency to set up a recycling unit in regenerated soil in the backyard of Ariyamangalam.
The space for the establishment of a unit has been identified and the Company plans to collect rent of 56,000 GBP per month from the agency. The unit will operate on the basis of a contract for three years and will have the ability to process approximately 50 tonnes of waste daily. The agency will collect waste from masses and transport it to the unit.
“The agency will move the machinery to Tiruch during the week. It was sought for the unit to be set up,” said the company’s head official. The waste will be spread over pellets that will be used as food on fish farms.
According to officials, the establishment of the recycling unit would ensure effective waste collection and would prevent sellers to dispose of waste into watercourses and free soil. Sellers often throw away the rotting fish waste into the Uyyakondan channel running near the Kasivilangi market. Similarly, poultry waste is thrown into a canal near Alwarthopp. Free land on the banks of the channel on the Vayalur and MM Nagar roads are used by poultry shops.
