
Five people riding motorcycles were killed and eight others were seriously injured after a truck allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road rammed into them on Saturday (January 31, 2026) afternoon.
The accident took place at the Gosain Nuagaon flyover when a speeding truck entered the traffic and crushed five cyclists under its wheels. Eight of the injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where two were reported to be in critical condition.
The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, but was later arrested. Police said the driver is undergoing a medical examination to determine if he is under the influence of alcohol. Preliminary investigation revealed that the truck was traveling on the wrong side of the road.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia of ₹4,000 each for the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
