A truck carrying decorative items belonging to a Kumbalam-based event management company caught fire on the service road of the state highway near Vyttila on Monday (December 22) around 3.30 pm.
While most of the cargo was gutted, no injuries were reported, including the truck driver, who was initially unaware of the fire. Tragedy was averted after a passing autorickshaw driver noticed smoke billowing from the cargo compartment and alerted the truck driver. By then passers-by had gathered and the fire brigade was informed.
“There were decorative items in the truck, including lights, clothes and bottles of carbon dioxide. Since the vehicle was on a service road, traffic was not significantly disrupted. The vehicle was isolated and the fire was extinguished in a short time,” HZS sources said. Fire contingents from Gandhinagar and Thripunithura stations responded.
The decorative items were transported back after the Mangaluru event. The truck, which was contracted for the job, sustained only minor damage.
