New Delhi: The former Indian cricket team Captain Sourava Ganguly’s older brother, Snehasish Ganguly and his wife Arpit, had a narrow escape while enjoying water sports in the Puri Sea, the police said on Monday. The incident occurred on Saturday evening near the Lighthouse area, where the couple was on speed.Video shots broadcast by local television channels showed that the ship was hit by a massive wave, loss of balance and reducing in harsh waters.“We were saved by the grace of God. I am still in trauma. It should not happen and water sports in the sea must be properly regulated. After returning to Calcutta I will write Puri SP and Odisha to the main minister,” Arpita said in a video message available with the PTI.She talked about a terrifying experience and stated that the ship was hit by a wave of “almost ten-storey high”, which caused the vessel to overturn and throw all passengers-including her into the sea.

“Fortunately, the fast lifeguard event saved our lives,” she added. The local police said the lifeguards on the beach were threwing themselves into the place and saving all tourists on board. Rubber floats were used to ensure passenger safety. The visibly shaken Arpita accused the incident of the “greed” of adventure sports operators. She claimed that the ship was unstable and carried only four passengers on the ship designed for ten, which is unbalanced and inappropriate to handle a strong tide.“Due to a smaller weight, the ship was lost and could not meet a huge wave. The sea was already very harsh,” she said.

“Although we were concerned about safety due to the harsh sea and tide, the operators assured us that it was safe. But shortly after she went out, the ship hit a huge wave and tipped it,” she said.Arpita demanded that the government tightened the regulations surrounding water sports in the region and state that the authorities would even consider banning these activities completely. The locals argued that the speed boat was operated by an untrained staff employed by a private adventure company.“The crew lacks the right skills to master the tide and the company ignored the basic security protocols ordered for such activities,” the eyewitness said.It was also argued that the company carried out water sports activities without obtaining the required permit from the PURI district administration.
