Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan on Thursday said that a society that cannot protect its women and children cannot claim to be civilized.
In a post on social media, Mr Haasan said discussions of development or progress are meaningless when women and children continue to live in danger.
According to Mr. Haasan, social decay continues because many people choose not to react strongly to injustice. When good people remain silent, wrongs gradually become normalized.
The actor-politician recalled the sentiment he expressed 32 years ago through his film Mahanadhi, when he was deeply disturbed by the social injustices he witnessed, and said the situation still hasn’t changed and the anger he felt then still remains with him.
Mr. Haasan’s comments come in the backdrop of several recent cases of girls being victims of serious crimes in Tamil Nadu.
