Mysuru district has reported a significant decline in maternal mortality cases during 2025.
According to an official statement on December 20, the number of maternal deaths in Mysuru this year has come down to 11 from 28 reported from January 2024 to December 2024.
The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in the district has come down from 76.50 per 100 million live births during 2024 to 30.20 per 100 million live births in 2025, according to Reproductive and Child Health Officer Dr. Mohammed Siraj.
The statement here described maternal death as the death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth or the postnatal period. “Such deaths occur as a result of pregnancy-related complications. Major causes of maternal mortality include heavy bleeding, infections, high blood pressure, unsafe abortions and heart disease,” the statement said, adding that maternal mortality has serious economic and emotional consequences for families and society.
A number of measures taken to prevent maternal deaths include timely and continuous provision of iron and calcium tablets to pregnant women based on information recorded in the Mother Card.
All private hospitals under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments Act (KPMEA) Authority are monitored and during the meetings of the authority chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, penalties are imposed on private hospitals where deficiencies are found in the management of maternal health care, the statement said.
Response vehicles are deployed in identified vulnerable areas, with complete monitoring carried out from the district level. Details of expected pregnancies are collected every month, the statement said.
While awareness is being created at the field level about the Kilkari Helpline which provides counseling to pregnant women, its interactive services and the importance of listening to the helpline’s messages, special attention is also given to adolescent girls with regard to pregnancy-related issues.
“Awareness is being created in the community about these issues as well as the Child Marriage Prohibition Act and related cases,” the statement said.
