
The Kottayam vigilance court on Saturday sentenced a former assistant engineer of Kumaranalloor zonal office in Kottayam municipality to seven years rigorous imprisonment for demanding a bribe of ₹15,000 for issuing a building permit.
After the verdict, the investigating commissioner and special judge (Vigilance) KV Rejanish sentenced the accused Martin Antony to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000 and further four years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act 188.
In case of delay in payment of the fine, the court ordered the convict to another three months in prison.
Since the applicant died before the main trial began, the prosecution relied on other direct and indirect evidence to prove the fact.
