A seminar was held on the promotion of Wayanad coffee
Wayanad coffee should be developed into a value-added product and reach the global markets through processing, packaging and branding instead of being seen only as an agricultural commodity, said Mananthavady MLA Usha Vijayan.
She said a concerted effort was needed to maximize the export potential of coffee and ensure higher income for farmers in Wayanad.
Ms. Vijayan was inaugurating a seminar organized at the Wayanad Social Service Society hall in Mananthavady on Tuesday (September 29) as part of the International Coffee Day.
The MLA emphasized the need to ensure greater participation of youth and women in the coffee sector. According to her, new business opportunities should be created for them in areas such as processing, manufacturing of value-added products, packaging, branding and marketing, she said.
International Coffee Day will be held on October 1.
The program was jointly organized by Government of Kerala, Coffee Board, KERA Project, Wayanad Coffee Growers Association, South Indian Coffee Growers Association and Kerala FPO-FPC Consortium.
