A rare maxillary tumor removed from a seven-year-old boy at the Chidambaram Government Dental Hospital

Doctors at the Cuddalore Government Dental College and Hospital have successfully performed a “rare and complex surgery” on a seven-year-old boy diagnosed with Giant Cell Granuloma, a rare cancerous lesion of the upper jaw.

According to the press release, the boy’s family went to the hospital with progressively increasing swelling of his upper jaw, complaining of difficulty breathing, eating and moving his teeth.

After a detailed clinical examination and investigation, the medical team diagnosed giant cell granuloma of the maxilla. Because the lesion grew rapidly and began to threaten the child’s airways, the doctors decided to proceed with an urgent surgical solution.

Due to the young age of the child and the location and extent of the tumor, administration of general anesthesia was particularly challenging. However, the anesthesiology team handled the child with great skill and vigilance and ensured the safe administration of general anesthesia.

A team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons performed a four-hour surgery during which the tumor was completely removed.

Due to the rarity of the lesion, its location in the upper jaw and the associated threat to the airways, the procedure was very demanding. The operation was completed successfully. The child is recovering well and remains stable under medical supervision.
