Panic briefly gripped commuters at the busy Bengaluru Metro station on Friday morning after a passenger’s leg got stuck in the gap between the train and the platform while alighting, leading to temporary disruption of services on the Purple Line.
The incident took place between 10.20am and 10.30am at the Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna metro station. According to officials, the passenger was getting off a crowded subway train when his foot slipped into the gap between the carriage and the edge of the platform.
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials described the incident as a rare occurrence and noted that such cases are not frequent. “Preliminary assessments suggest that heavy movement of passengers and crowding during rush hours may have contributed to the mishap,” a senior official told The Hindu.
According to officials, the Emergency Exit System (ETS) was activated immediately after the incident was reported. “The station dispatcher, security personnel and other staff on duty responded quickly, stopped the train and started rescue operations. The passenger was safely rescued and first aid was administered. He sustained only minor injuries and did not require major medical treatment,” the official added.
The incident resulted in a brief interruption of metro service on the Purple Line. BMRCL officials said at least three routes were affected, causing minor delays at several stations along the corridor before normal operations were resumed.
Officials urged commuters to exercise caution when boarding and alighting trains. Officials pointed out that there is always a small gap between the train doors and the edge of the platform and reminded passengers to heed repeated onboard announcements warning riders to be aware of the gap.
Speaking to The Hindu, Shruthi G., an eyewitness, said the incident created panic among the passengers. “Everyone was shocked when it happened. The passenger was in severe pain and panicked. Fellow commuters and metro staff immediately rushed to help. Fortunately, he was safely rescued after a few tense moments,” she said.
