A new court complex to replace the British-era Magistrates’ Court

An expert team led by Justice PB Balaji, a judge of the Madras High Court, on Saturday inspected the government land identified by the district administration for setting up the first combined court complex in Vaniyambadi town.
Court officials said the proposed new court complex would replace the city’s dilapidated British-era Magistrates’ Court. “A permanent court complex is a must to end the suffering of litigants who have to travel between courts located at different places in the city,” said AC Devakumar, president of the Bar Association (Vaniyambadi).
Accompanied by Collector V. Ravi Kumar, Justice Mr. Balaji, in-charge of Tirupattur district for court-related activities, inspected the government land near the scam in the presence of District Magistrate M. Selvam and Chief Justice MK Anusha.
The proposed court complex, which is spread over an area of 2.25 acres, will accommodate all the three courts, namely the Judicial Magistrate Court, the Subordinate Court and the District Munsif Court. It will also have judicial quarters for these courts in the complex, which will be built at a cost of ₹42 crore. .
Currently, Vaniyambadi has three lower courts located in different areas of the city. On average, each court is located at least 1.5 km from the other court. As a result, litigants, lawyers and court staff had to commute from one court to another, as some claimants have cases in different courts that could be opened on the same day.
In that case, easy access to all these courts was a challenge.
The existing Magistrate’s Court, the oldest of the three courts, has been located on a government estate near the town since the 1920s. The District Munsif Court was established in 1995 and functions from a rented room in the Commercial Tax Building. The Subordinate Court, established in 2009, also functioned from a rented room in the city.
