Karnataka High Court Judge SG Pandit on Saturday inaugurated the new Mediation Center building at the premises of the Mysuru District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in the city.

Although the Commission already had a Mediation Center on its premises, it did not have its own exclusive building.

Speaking at the inauguration, at an event jointly organized by the Mysuru District Administration, the Mysuru District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and the Mysuru District Bar Association, Justice SG Pandit, who is also an administrative judge, said conciliation or mediation was not new in the country.

The practice of mediation has been a part of Indian culture since the Mahabharata period, he said, referring to the Krishna Sandhana.

Pointing out that courts are under immense pressure these days, he said these conciliation and mediation centers will become an important avenue for speedy justice by ensuring speedy disposal of cases.

Mr Pandit said litigants are generally in a position to follow what their advocates advise them in the early stages and consider their advocates to be “godlike” figures.

In matters related to consumer disputes, lawyers should understand the mindset of their clients and preferably advise them to settle their disputes through mediation or conciliation, he said.

If advocates explain how quickly cases can be resolved through conciliation and the benefits of such a settlement, litigants would surely agree, making dispute resolution easier, he added.

The judge also said that Mysuru now has a well-equipped new mediation center and appealed to the public and advocates to make good use of the facility.

Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Chairman Justice TG Shivashankaregowda and Chief District and Sessions Judge Usharani were among those present.
