The two-day annual meeting of the National Level Technical Committee on Livestock Statistics began in Amaravati on Thursday, bringing together representatives from all states and union territories to review and validate data on livestock products and map out strategies for the growth of the sector.
The meeting was attended by Director General (Statistics) and Chairman TCD Kaal Singh, Special Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Takheer Ahmed, Andhra Pradesh Special Chief Secretary (Animal Husbandry) B. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rajasekhar said that Andhra Pradesh plays a key role in India’s livestock farming with globally recognized breeds such as Ongole and Punganur cattle, Godavari buffaloes, Nellore and Macherla sheep and Aseel poultry. He noted that the livestock sector generates more revenue than services and industry in the state with a revenue target of ₹ 2 lakh crore for 2025-26.
Mr. Ahmed highlighted the importance of accurate livestock statistics, describing them as critical to policy planning and the digital agriculture framework.
Officials said statewide discussions focused on strengthening livestock surveys, with Andhra Pradesh recently completing a comprehensive survey of nearly 20,000 livestock-keeping families. The data, they say, should inform future policy and improve support for livestock farmers.
