Post-match violence marred an otherwise dramatic 1-1 draw between Jamshedpur FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur, sparking fresh concerns over fan safety in the Indian Super League.
A 28-year-old Mohun Bagan fan, identified as Rajiv Roy from Howrah, according to Bengali news outlet Sangbad Pratidin, was allegedly attacked outside the stadium after the match.
According to eyewitness reports, Roy and his friend Shubhmoy Jana were confronted by a group of 8-10 individuals after the final whistle. The situation quickly escalated when Roy was hit in the head by a brick from behind.
Recounting the ordeal, Roy said the pair were traveling to attend their first away match. “We came to watch an away match for the first time. After the match, 8-10 people attacked us outside the stadium. They abused us vulgarly. A brick came from behind and hit us on the head,” he said.
The impact left him with a serious head injury that required 10 stitches. He was immediately taken to Tata Hospital where scans were carried out and remains under medical observation. His condition is currently stable.
Members of the Mohun Bagan management, including secretary Srinjoy Bose and president Debashis Dutta, checked on the injured supporter. Executive committee member Anupam Sahu also rushed to the spot after receiving the report of the incident and arranged for Roy to get prompt medical attention.
The violence overshadowed what was a fiercely combative encounter on the pitch. Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 15th minute with Liston Colac’s stunning long-range effort against the run of play. Jamshedpur FC responded with intent but struggled to break down a disciplined defense for most of the match.
But the visitors found a dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time when substitute Ritwik Das headed home Raphael Messi Bouli’s cross in the 95th minute to rescue a point and keep the two teams level on 14 points after seven games.
While the result dented Mohun Bagan’s title hopes, the focus shifted firmly to fan safety, with renewed calls for tighter security and accountability following the disturbing incident.
