Dehradun police on Thursday (January 29, 2026) arrested a 50-year-old businessman for allegedly assaulting a 17-year-old Kashmiri scarf seller.
The victim, Mohd Tavish, suffered multiple injuries in the attack, including a broken arm. While his cousin Mohd Danish escaped with minor injuries.
According to the FIR, on the complaint of the victim’s brother, the duo approached a shopkeeper to buy refreshments. “Even after asking them several times, the shopkeeper did not answer them at first. But later he brought chips from inside the shop. By then, my brothers had decided to buy snacks from another shop and picked up bags with handkerchiefs. As they were speaking in Kashmiri, the shopkeeper got angry and started abusing them,” the complainant told The Hindu.
As the arguments over the use of Kashmiri language escalated, the accused picked up a bat and thrashed the youths, the complainant added. In the FIR, the boys alleged that the shopkeeper used social and religious slurs against them.
Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, Ajay Singh said an FIR has been lodged against the accused for “intentional insults intended to provoke a breach of peace or incite to commit an offense and voluntarily cause harm to someone”.
“A medical examination of the young man was carried out, his statements were recorded. The police are examining all aspects,” he added.
This is not the first incident of Kashmir falcons in Uttarakhand. Similar attacks were also reported in May 2025 and 2024.
