The Katpadi police in Vellore on Tuesday arrested a 53-year-old man from Bengaluru for allegedly damaging an ATM of a public sector bank in an attempt to steal cash.
Police said the arrested person was identified as S. Varadarajan, 53. Initial investigation revealed that he had been roaming the Chittoor-Katpadi-Arakkonam-Chennai railway route for the past few weeks after being unemployed. Police said they identified an ATM near the farmers market in Katpadi. He allegedly tried to break the machine’s cabinet, but this attempt failed.
Bank officials saw the CCTV footage and alerted the local police, who arrested him. Police seized mobile phones, welding machines and fake ATM cards. A case has been registered. He was lodged in the Vellore Central Jail. A probe is underway.
