Panic spread at Thalassery General Hospital on Tuesday after an IRPC (Initiative for Rehabilitation and Palliative Care) help desk volunteer was allegedly stabbed by a youth near the hospital’s pharmacy.
The injured was identified as KP Valsaraj, 50. He sustained a stab wound on the left side of his abdomen.
Police said the attacker, a youth allegedly addicted to drugs, was taken into custody and later arrested. Valsaraj is being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
The Kannur district unit of the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) condemned the incident and expressed concern over the recurring attacks on government hospitals.
The association reiterated its long-standing demand for the deployment of special industrial security forces in major hospitals and armed police personnel in all institutions with emergency departments. KGMOA also urged the government to set up permanent police help desks in hospitals to deal with cases of victims.
