In an effort to solve the problem of disposal of unclaimed bodies, the Government Medical College, Kottayam is planning to set up a state-of-the-art gas crematorium on its premises.
According to the authorities, the project, funded with ₹ 1.5 crore from the Devaswom Minister’s Constituent Asset Development Fund and the VN Vasavana Cooperative, aims to improve the infrastructure of the college. A gas crematorium is being built on a 50-cent plot in the Medical College campus.
“Construction will be carried out with advanced equipment designed to minimize environmental pollution and quickly incinerate dead bodies through an odorless cremation process. Since it runs on LPG, there is no environmental pollution. Scientific pollution control systems are being prepared for this,” the official said
The facility will include basic amenities such as security, office space, generator rooms, parking, garden, lighting, toilets and sewage systems.
The crematorium will be useful for handling unclaimed bodies arriving at the Medical College Hospital. Arpookara grama panchayat, where the Medical College is located, does not have a public crematorium. People here were referred to crematoria in other places. The crematorium coming up at the Medical College will also be useful for other grama panchayats in the Ettumanoor constituency.
The construction is carried out by the Uralungal Labor Contract Cooperative Society (ULCC).
