An act of generosity by the family of a youth from Chikka Mandya village in Mandya district who agreed to donate his organs has given many patients a new lease of life.
Organ harvesting was done at the Trauma and Emergency Care Center (TECC) at the state-run Victoria Hospital campus, which is attached to the Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI). While the collection procedure was taking place in the trauma center, the organs were subsequently allocated for transplantation to protocol-eligible recipients.
Victoria Hospital Medical Superintendent Deepak S. and TECC Special Officer Asima Banu said the coordinated efforts of the BMCRI team, TECC staff and the Organ Donation Facilitation Team from Jeevasaarthakate ensured a smooth procurement process.
Bike accident
Darshan (name changed), a resident of Chikka Mandya in Kasaba hobli, sustained injuries after falling from a motorcycle on 22 February. After returning home after the fall, his condition later worsened and he was admitted to a local hospital where scans revealed severe internal bleeding on the brain. He was referred to TECC Victoria Hospital for advanced care.
Despite intensive treatment and repeated clinical examinations, he showed no signs of neurological recovery. After two days of observation and mandatory tests, a senior panel of doctors officially declared him brain dead in accordance with established medical protocols.
After the consultation
Following the advice of the Jeevasaarthakate team, the bereaved family decided to donate his organs.
Livers, kidneys, heart valves and other organs were obtained at the trauma center and distributed to patients in need, potentially benefiting six individuals. Kidney and liver transplant procedures were performed at the Institute of Nephrourology (INU) and the Institute of Gastroenterology Sciences and Organ Transplantation (IGOT), while the heart valves were sent to another hospital.
