A dry day was observed over Ernakulam
A dry day was observed in households across the district as part of an intensive dredging campaign launched by the city corporation to tackle monsoon-related diseases. Corporation Health Standing Committee Chairperson Seena Gokulan launched the campaign in Puthukkalavattom by visiting houses along with health workers.
The campaign was launched to eliminate the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever. Health workers who visited the homes explained the importance of resource reduction measures and the steps to be taken. They also distributed pamphlets on dengue prevention.
Potted plants and houseplants become a menace
Inspections carried out by health workers in different parts of the district found that flower pots in households and saucer trays placed under them to collect water had become major breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The Ministry of Health has warned against the use of such trays and advised the public to avoid them if possible. Houseplants grown in water, including money plants, can also harbor mosquitoes. The ministry advised the public to change the water in such containers at least once a week or grow plants in soil.
Officials reiterated that dengue fever can only be effectively prevented by regular inspection of premises and ensuring that water does not stagnate. Preventive activities will continue in the following days, the ministry said. Resource curtailment will take place every Friday in schools, Saturday in offices and Sunday in homes.
