Dharwad District Administration and Dharwad Zilla Panchayat in collaboration with various government agencies and NGOs organized a dog show and stray dog adoption camp on February 22 in Dharwad.
Dharwad Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhuvanesh Patil said at a press conference in Dharwad on February 21 that the program will be held from 9 am to 4 pm at the Karnataka College ground in Dharwad (KCD) and will be inaugurated by Minister-in-Charge Santosh Lad.
Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department, Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, Karnataka Veterinary Association, Humane World for Animals and other NGOs helped organize the event. Over 150 dogs of various breeds are already registered for the show. Prizes will be awarded based on health, care, discipline and performance.
Mr. Patil said that free rabies vaccination, combined vaccination against common diseases, de-worming, neck belt and leash, starter pack, sterilization within one year and rabies certificate will be provided to the adopted dogs.
He also said that according to a recent survey conducted with the help of NGOs, Dharwad has 15,318 domestic dogs and 31,018 stray dogs in urban areas and 3,030 domestic dogs and 5,817 stray dogs in rural areas. 130 dogs of 25 breeds participated in the exhibition in 2024 and 75 were awarded.
He added that participation in the 2026 dog show has increased compared to 2024, and for the first time police dogs will be part of the event.
