A 12-member Asian Development Bank (ADB) delegation is visiting the city for the last four days to discuss various aspects of the Musi Riverfront Development project with the officials concerned.
ADB approved the loan of ₹ 4,100 crore in principle after studying the preliminary report of the state government sent through the Jal Shakti Ministry for funding under the National River Conservation Plan.
A delegation led by ADB Senior Urban Development Specialist Momoko Nitta (Tada) arrived in the city on Sunday 18 January. The next day, the delegation met MMRCL officials, where the scope of the project and the city’s development plan were discussed.
In the following days, the management of flood and sewage components was also discussed. On Wednesday, there was a key discussion on the ADB’s Environmental and Social Framework, which was adopted by the multilateral financial institution on January 1 and replaced the earlier Conservation Policy Statement.
The ESF provides stronger environmental and social protections and requirements that are clearer and tailored to each project and specific country context, as described on the ADB website. The framework also adopts a risk-based and adaptive management approach. Accordingly, the visit included an interview on the project’s specific environmental and social guarantees with an emphasis on gender.
Officials said team visits will take place on Thursday (Jan. 22). Places scheduled to be visited include Osmansagar Reservoir, Himayatsagar Reservoir, Narsingi Junction, Ibrahimbagh Bridge, Tipu Khan Bridge, Bapughat Bridge and Kismatpur Bridge.
Visitation is being kept extremely low to avoid media attention and possible protests from families displaced during the October 2024 eviction.
