A Child Help Desk will be available at every police station in Bihar from October 2

The Samrat Choudhary-led Bihar government has decided to set up Child Help Desks (also called Children’s Corners) in all 1,377 police stations and outposts (OPs) to curb crime against children in the state.

The Police Headquarters (PHQ) on Thursday (September 17, 2026) issued instructions to the Inspectors of Police of all districts in this regard.

Child Help Desk or Child Corners will be set up at every police station across the state on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. All the affected districts have been instructed to submit compliance reports to the weaker section of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) by October 5.

Target

The aim is not only to curb the increasing number of crimes against children, but also to provide them with a dedicated space where they can openly discuss any issues at the police station, the guidelines said.

Through these counters, children will also be provided with information about the laws that apply to them, including the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO). In addition, counters are set up at each police station to provide a safe and child-friendly environment for children.

The initiative is being conducted in accordance with Section 8(5) of the Bihar Police Act, 2007 and the guidelines issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

CWPO to operate counters

In accordance with the guidelines, the Child Help Desk will be set up at a location within the police station premises that will be clearly visible to outside visitors. It will be kept completely separate from the lock-up. The area will be designed to be child friendly and will have a different look to the rest of the police station.

The counter will function under the Child Protection Officer (CWPO) of the police station. The name, designation and mobile number of the CWPO along with the name and mobile number of the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) will be clearly displayed at each centre.

Efficient and trained female police officers will be deployed at all police stations to deal with and interact with girls.

The mobile numbers displayed will be active at all times to ensure immediate resolution of complaints or requests for assistance received from children and their parents or guardians. Complaints will be processed within the specified time and complete details of their processing will be recorded in the records.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) deputes officials to monitor the counters

Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) will continuously monitor child assistance services. Besides, they will also be supervised by Special Crime-Cm-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Cam-In-Charge, Special Crime Police Unit (SJPU) and other senior district police officers.

The aim of monitoring is to ensure sensitivity and effective policing in matters involving children. Regular supervision will be carried out and proper records will be kept.
