The Congress settled for a “non-celebrity” local party leader in Kozhikode Corporation’s Kallai ward for the local polls. Her plan to field filmmaker VM Vina as a ‘surprise candidate’ and mayoral aspirant failed miserably after it emerged that his name was not in the voters’ list released by the State Election Commission. Although Mr. Vinu filed a petition in the Kerala High Court for a favorable ruling, it was also dismissed. On Thursday, the party declared Baiju Kalakkandi, president of its Panniyankara mandal committee, as the new candidate from Kallai.
