The Eastern Cyber Crime Division police have launched an investigation to track down a person who tried to mislead candidates for the post of Fireman at the Ministry of Defense (Army), 515 Army Base Workshop (ABW), Ulsoor by sending fake emails claiming that the recruitment dates have been postponed.
The scam came to light when one of the candidates approached the Army Office to clarify the mail he had received. According to the complaint by Colonel Jyothirlingam SS, Security Officer Commandant and General Manager, Army Base Workshop, the recruitment is to be held from February 13 to 15.
According to him, all the eligible candidates were issued admit cards and on January 12, an official email was sent from the authorized email ID informing the candidates about the recruitment schedule.
However, on February 7, a candidate, identified as Dilip Kumar Meena, informed the unit’s civil defense staff that he had received an email that the recruitment of firefighters had been postponed from February 15 to February 22 due to technical reasons. The email was sent from a fake email ID that closely resembled the official address.
A preliminary survey showed that more candidates received the email. The police suspect that the e-mail was meant to mislead applicants and prevent them from participating in the recruitment process.
Officials described the act as a serious and deliberate attempt to interfere with the recruitment process.
After the incident, the unit sent a clarification email to all Fireman candidates informing them about the fake email ID and reiterating that the recruitment will be conducted as scheduled from February 13 to 15.
An FIR has been registered against unknown persons under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act.
An earlier case
