The electoral fraud case in Aland constituency, which is currently being investigated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), sparked a heated exchange between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP members in the legislature on Tuesday.
BR Patil, MLA for Aland sought to raise the issue while pointing out that the SIT had filed a charge sheet in this regard naming former BJP MLA Subhash Guttedar and his son as the main accused.
Although UT spokesperson Khader assured him that he would grant permission to discuss the issue later, Mr. Patil claimed that the allegation now shows who was at fault. “We need to know how many BJP members won through chori voting (vote theft) before the 2023 elections,” he observed.
This ruffled the feathers of BJP members who launched a counter attack. BJP member V. Sunil Kumar said the party was ready to discuss the issue. “But let’s wait for the SIT to submit at least an interim report so that we have some material to discuss,” he said.
Rural and Panchayat Development Minister RajPriyank Kharge joined the attack with Mr. Patil, wondering where else could members talk about the chori vote if not in the Legislative Assembly. BJP members accused the Congress of making “false allegations”.
The heated exchange ended with the speaker making it clear that he would allow Mr. Patil to raise the issue again and moving on to the next item on the agenda.
The chargesheet in the case filed by the SIT named former BJP MLA Subhash Guttedar and his son as the prime accused.
