A 15 -year -old boy from Kerala, who came to Nilgiris with his family on tour, was killed by a falling tree that was uprooted on Sunday (May 25, 2025) due to heavy rain.
The victim, identified as P. Adhidev of Kozhikode, was on the eighth mile, a popular picnic site for tourists when a tree fell on it. The residents and family members tried to rush him to the hospital, but he had already died of injury, the police said. Collector Nilgiris Lakshmi Bhavesa Tanneer and Coonoor Mla K. Ramacandran met with a family of teenagers and comforted them.
In the next incident, three people were rescued by the Tamil Fire and Rescue Services staff after SUV stuck in the flooded river near Chooni in Gudalur on Saturday evening (May 24, 2025). Firefighters saved the passengers after securing the car ropes to prevent washing.
Rainfalls were intensified across Nilgiris on Sunday, with an average of 47.53 mm until Sunday morning. Avalanche received more than 200 mm of precipitation, the officials said.
Despite the preventive measures of the Forest Department and Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) to close most of the main tourist sites, including avalanche, ninth mile, pine forest, Dodbetta peak, Pykara and Ooty’s botans, where the annual flowers and fruit houses that were held. On Sunday evening (May 25, 2025), Mrs. Tanneer said that the government botanical garden and a rose garden would be closed on Monday on Monday.
P. Krishnamurty, a district fireman (Nilgiris district), said that the fire brigade received more than 31 complaints about the fallen trees through Nilgiris. “We cooperate with other government authorities by local civil authorities to clean the trees and restore the flow of operation throughout the district,” said Mr. Krishnamurty. He added that about 30 trees were uprooted in the Glenmorgan area due to extreme weather. The Nilgiris District Administration also urged tourists to return to their hotel rooms with twilight.
Mrs. Tanneer and Mr. Ramacandran visited the areas susceptible to landslides and evaluated measures to alleviate rains that are carried out throughout the district. They also visited families who were evacuated on temporary shelters for help in Nilgiris and distributed blankets and basic commodities.
