A 10-year-old tribal girl died when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) allegedly planted by Maoists exploded in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district on Tuesday (October 28, 2025), police said.
Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Manoharpur, Jaydeep Lakra told PTI that the girl had gone to pluck Sial leaves in Tilaposi forest when her foot accidentally fell on an IED planted underground by alleged Maoists.
“The Maoists planted the IED to target the security forces but unfortunately an innocent girl unknowingly stood on the IED which led to the explosion and her death on the spot on Tuesday morning…,” Lakra said.
The police officer said he would write to the state government seeking compensation under the provisions for victims of Maoist violence to be paid to the victim’s family.
Senior Officer of Jeraikela Police Station Amit Kumar told PTI that the girl was identified as Siria Herenz, daughter of Jai Masih Herenz, a native of Digha village, and as usual she had gone to pluck Sial leaves with her friends as the school was closed on Tuesday (October 28, 2025) due to the Chhath festival.
“Both the girl’s legs were severely damaged in the blast. We along with the CRPF have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem after which it will be handed over to the victim’s family,” Mr Kumar said.
