A 15 -year -old girl who maintained more than 75% of burns after reportedly ignited by unidentified miscreants in the Odisha Puri district of July, died on Saturday (August 2, 2025) in Aiims in Nový Delhi.
However, in a large reversal of the state police, just hours after the girl’s death, she said that “no other person” had been involved in the incident. Earlier news said the girl was settled by three people and set fire.
The crime branch in Odisha took over the investigation when the incident provoked nationwide outrage and came only a few days after a university student himself self -detected on the Fakir campus Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore.
The government led by Mohan Majhi, which was already under fire over the incident in Balasore, has renewed the renewed criticism of the opposition parties that intensified their demand for improving women’s security measures in ODISha.
“We are deeply sad when we hear reports of the death of the victim. The police carried out an investigation with maximum sincerity. The investigation achieved its final phase,” police Odisha said in post X.
“According to the investigation so far, it is clear that no other person is involved. Therefore, we ask everyone not to make any sensitive comments during this tragic moment,” the state police said.
The girl was aircraft transported from Aiims, Bhubaneswar, to Delhi for advanced treatment. Both hospitals say that the investigative teams have recorded their statements several times. Although she suffered from 75% of burns, she was able to speak. Police Odisha will soon come out with a detailed report of the probe.
Main Minister Odisha Mahan Majhi expressed his sorrow over her death and said that despite all the efforts of the government and devoted care for a specialized medical team in Aiims, her life could not be saved.
“I am deeply shocked when I learned of the death of the girl. I pray for the eternal peace of her soul,” the main minister said.
The incident occurred below the Balanga Police Station in the Puri district. Over the past two weeks, the report suggests that her health is improving and that doctors have tried to graft the skin.
Former Chief Minister and leader Biju Janata gave (BJD) Naveen Patnaik said he was deeply saddened by her demise. “My condolences to a young girl and prayers are with family members in grief.
The President of the Congress Committee Odisha Pradesh Bhakta Charan Das said he was “deeply sad and broken” in the news. “I demand a strict action in this incident and justice for a girl,” he said.
BJD demanded compensation of 2 crore for other relatives of girls. Despite the announcement of the Odisha Police, the party also demanded the arrest of three miscreants, which is said to have committed a crime.
Meanwhile, the safety of the residences of the main Minister Odisha and two representatives of the CMS was strengthened. The path leading to their residences was blocked.
