US-Iran news LIVE updates: Trump says Hezbollah tried to stop fighting; Iran’s oil exports fell 84% in May | Today’s news

US-Iran News LIVE: Trump abandons proposed military operation to seize Iran’s enriched uranium from its nuclear sites. The operation would require weeks of sustained presence in the conflict zone and risk becoming what Trump has dubbed a “Jimmy Carter” moment. The refusal signals restraint in the course of the nuclear negotiations.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog sent a message to member states on Thursday, repeatedly calling on Iran to account for its enriched uranium following the bombing of its nuclear sites a year ago. “Iran must urgently inform the agency about the fate of its enriched uranium” and allow comprehensive inspections, the IAEA signaled.

Trump also attacked the House’s vote on Thursday to limit his war powers, saying it came during his “final negotiations” to end the war with Iran.

The truce is unraveling as the fighting intensifies

The American-brokered truce between Israel and Lebanon collapsed almost immediately. Within hours of the announcement, Israel launched intense strikes on southern Lebanon. Excluded from the talks, Hezbollah’s leader rejected the deal and his forces fired rockets at Israeli targets.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reports more than 3,300 dead and more than one million displaced since March. However, the asymmetry of the ceasefire agreement may explain its rapid collapse: Hezbollah faces demands for a unilateral ceasefire, while Israel faces no demand to withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory.

The commander of Iran’s Quds Force demanded that Israel withdraw to pre-conflict positions. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has warned officials that actions that cause public frustration will serve the interests of opponents.

Broader talks to end the US-Iran war remain on hold over Lebanon’s status. Iran insists on terms that run counter to Netanyahu’s goal of completely disarming Hezbollah. The temporary truce reflects the incompatibility between the Iranian and Israeli positions.
