Anastasija Sevast’s shocked the tennis world by defeating the champion Jessica Pegula at the Canadian open in Montreal 1.
Pegula, ranked for 5 years and a double champion advocate, started strong. The first set easily took and in the second was 2-0. Sevastov, however, remained calm and slowly turned the match. She started to beat more winners and made fewer mistakes while Pegula began to fight under pressure.
“I don’t know. Somehow I was 2-0 in the second set and started playing better and better. The third set, I played really well. I just tried to stay on the pitch as long as possible,” Sevastova said after the match.
“I’m just trying to stay in court”
In the final set dominated Sevastov. Three times, Pegula broke and played with certainty on her own service. She saved 9 out of 13 turns and transferred 6 out of 10 chances to breaking Pegula. It was a complete turn since the beginning of the match.
Sevastova, 35, was from tennis for more than a year because of the torn ACL and the birth of her child. She returned to the competition 13 months ago using a protected ranking. This victory has been its biggest since returning and shows that it can still compete with the best.
With the victory of Sevast, the 11-matching winner of the Pegula on the Canadian Open ends. In the fourth round, it is now moving in the face of Naomi Osaka – another big test for veteran Latvia.
“Somehow I was 2-0 in the second set and started playing better and better. The third set, I played really well. I just tried to stay on the pitch as long as possible,” Sevastova added.
Sevastova is more ready to lock the corners with the four-time Grand Slam Naomi Osaka champion, who defeated the 22nd Seom Osaka 6-2, 6-4 in round 32.
