Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman planted a sapling under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (a tree in the name of mother) initiative at the deputy commissioner’s office in Raichur on Thursday to mark World Environment Day.

The initiative was organized by the district administration with the coordination of SPMCIL under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Ms. Sitharaman also spoke to the students present at the event about how important tree planting is to anything else for the good environment and future generations.

“It is the duty of every individual to protect the environment. Plant one tree in your mother’s name. We have to join hands to ensure more green cover,” Ms. Sitharaman advised the students.

Deputy Commissioner Poovitha S. said that 50,000 saplings of local tree species are being planted under the Bharat Vanna Yojana. Of these, 10,000 will be planted in the area of ​​the municipal administration. The rest of the saplings will be planted in the solid waste management area of ​​Raichur Municipal Corporation.

She said Raichur district has less than 2% green cover. The initiative will help increase this percentage.
