Doctors at Medstar Hospitals in Tadepalli have successfully cured a boy from Georgia, Europe who was suffering from Pulmonary Atresia, a rare and complex congenital heart disease.
According to a report issued by the hospital, the child had been dealing with serious health problems since birth. Conditions included a poorly developed left lung and persistently low oxygen levels. He had previously undergone four major heart surgeries and stenting in Georgia.
A previously performed Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunt operation on his right lung provided only minimal blood flow, resulting in a gradual deterioration of oxygen saturation. When the family approached Medstar Hospitals, a team of doctors performed an assessment and explored possible treatment strategies before formulating a customized surgical plan.
Doctors led by the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) team performed right ventricular pulmonary artery (RV-PA) reconstruction using a prosthetic graft. The surgery was successful and the patient showed a gradual but significant recovery with improved oxygen levels, the report said.
