‘In a family of four, we all lived the same dream’: KS Bharat announces retirement from international cricket

India’s KS Bharat (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar) Indian wicketkeeper-batsman KS Bharat has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a career that saw him play seven Test matches for the country. The 32-year-old shared an emotional message on social media, reflecting on the sacrifices, support and determination that helped him achieve his dream of representing India.Despite earning a reputation as a safe pair of hands behind the stumps and being part of India’s squad for the 2023 Test World Cup final, Bharat has struggled to secure a long-term place in Tests. His last appearance came against England in Visakhapatnam in February 2024. He scored 221 runs in seven Tests, finishing with 18 catches and one stumping. Announcing his decision, Bharat wrote, “It is with a proud heart and a sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from international cricket. Playing for my country has been the greatest honor of my life. This journey of mine has required great resilience and strength, but the honor of representing India in Tests is worth every moment.”In his farewell letter, Bharat paid tribute to his family and credited them for supporting his cricketing ambitions since childhood.“As a family of four we have lived the same dream for two decades, a big heart to my sister, mom and dad for creating the environment and support system they were. I am a product of their love, discipline and hard work,” he wrote.Bharat also thanked the BCCI, Andhra Cricket Association, Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association, teammates and ground players for helping shape his career.He added: “Thank you, the BCCI and all the coaches and managers I have come across in my career who have given me unconditional support by creating a great environment for me to play and excel at the highest level.”The wicketkeeper reserved special praise for Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid, who all played a pivotal role in his journey.He concluded by saying, “A big thanks to my first IPL captain Virat Kohli for giving me the opportunity to show my skills and make a name for myself. A big thanks to my India captain Rohit Sharma under whom I made my Test debut is priceless and unspeakable. For my India coach Rahul Dravid, his leadership from India A to the Indian team is unforgettable.”
