In a strong position against the poor conditions of the road, the Kerela High Court warned on Tuesday that engineers would personally be responsible for every pothole found on public roads. The court ordered officials to perform a comprehensive road audit under their jurisdiction and submit detailed reports within two weeks.
The warning came during the hearing conducted by Judge Devan Ramacandran after the mention of Amicus Curiae, which indicated a sharp increase in traffic accidents caused by poor road maintenance and uncontrollable traffic disturbance. The reports submitted by the court emphasized systemic failure in the maintenance of infrastructure and the recovery of traffic, especially in Kochi, Live law reported.
The Kochi Corporation and Minister of Public Works Department (PWD) were present during the hearing. The leading government acknowledged its responsibility and admitted that the inspection and maintenance of road safety are directly falling under their duty.
Ramacandran’s justice explained that time for vague assurances ended. “The real measures will have to follow and the officers concerned and engineers have taken personally responsible,” he said. The court stressed that the liability will now be direct and individual, not lost in bureaucratic strata.
The High Court also dealt with the issue of reckless proceedings, in particular including heavy vehicles. He ordered all the safety initiatives proposed by the transport department for Kochi to be implemented throughout the state with the necessary updates. The orders must be issued immediately and reported back to the court.
“The cries of families that lose their loved ones because of traffic accidents caused by potholes are something that this court cannot be dealt with,” said Judge Ramacandran.
The thing will be heard again in two weeks. The court explained that it expects visible results and compliance with the fortress, not just promises on paper.
