Gurmitkal MLA Sharanagouda Kandkur has urged Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to create a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Gurmitkal Assembly constituency to promote industry and provide jobs to the youth.

He was addressing a gathering on Thursday after attending the inaugural program for Farmer Training Center and Common Facility Center (CFC) at Baddepalli village in Gurmitkal taluk of Yadgir district.

Mr. Kandkur said the Gurmitkal constituency remains the most backward among others in the Kalyan region of Karnataka with backwardness in education, health and industry while infrastructure is lacking.

“It is my honor to submit my request to you to address the long standing issues involving underdevelopment. Industries should be set up to provide jobs to the youth based on their educational attainment. I request you to take necessary steps to establish SEZ here to eradicate the growing economic imbalance,” Mr Kandkur said.

The MLA also said that maternal and infant mortality rates are high. The problem of malnutrition among women and nursing mothers is increasing and is not being effectively addressed. Inadequate infrastructure in education and healthcare continues to affect women, who hold them back from obtaining higher education. Migration to big cities in search of work is commonplace. People in rural areas are forced to drink contaminated water due to insufficient water supply, he said.

“Yadgir district has been declared an aspirational district by NITI Aayog. The Union government should initiate initiatives to address all the growing problems and announce special financial assistance for the district,” he added.

Mr. Kandkur also urged Ms. Sitharaman to take the initiative to upgrade the rail coach factory that has been set up at the Kadechur-Badiyal industrial hub and also the Sindgi-Kodangal National Highway, the project of which has been under discussion for years. He said that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) should be set up either in Raichur or Yadgir for the benefit of the people.

He then submitted a memorandum to the Central Finance Minister.

Ms. Sitharaman replied to him in her speech that she would take up the issues with the concerned departments of the Union Government to take appropriate action.
