On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition of a renowned music composer Ilaiyaraaaaaa, who tried to transfer the dispute by copyright in terms of more than 500 compositions, from the High Court in Bombay to the Madras High Court.
The bench led by the chief judge BR Gavai, together with the judges to Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria, rejected the arguments of the higher advocate Gopalanaayanan, who represented Ilaiyaraja and urged the transfer, PTI informed.
At the beginning of the hearing, Sony Music Entertainment, the lawyer informed the bench that the company initiated the case at the Supreme Court in Mumbai, and at that time there was no similar case at the Madras High Court.
“The application is rejected,” the bench said.
The legal case began from the action initiated by Sony Music Entertainment India in 2022 before the High Court in Mumbai. Sony was looking for a court order to reduce Ilaiyaraaaaja Music N Management PVT LTD (IMMPL) from the use of 536 music works.
The company claims that it has obtained the rights to these works through oriental records and echoes of recording, the entity with which Ilaiyaraja has long been involved in the court proceedings.
However, IMMPL claimed that 310 out of 536 disputed work were already under court proceedings before the court proceedings.
This case, which was originally filed by Ilaiyaraja in 2014 against the ECHO record, questions its claim to its compositions and strives to recognize the moral and economic rights of the composer according to copyright.

Ilaiyaraja is one of the most prolific composers of India with more than 7,500 songs in 1,500 films.
