The community initiative of the ecological renewal from the forest department of Tamil by lapping in the local community has helped restore the unused section of the intermediate infertile soil with the degraded edges of the stream along the UPPanar River near Cuddalore. The mangrove island with a native mangrove species has now been formed on the section.
For years, the income land remained owned by Kudikad Panchayat near the Cuddalore Sipcot unused section of the intermediate infertile soil with degraded edges of the stream and suffered neglect due to the growth of invasive species. The soil was selected for the recovery process because it included low -laid areas susceptible to salt solution with natural tidal influence, which is ecologically ideal for mangrove regeneration.
The site was assessed and the forest department initiated the renewal effort by placing the relevant mangrove species on the basis of salinity and tidal conditions in the region.
According to B. IQBAL, forest reach officer (FRO), Pichavaram Range, “Invasive species of Prosoris Juliflora has been removed and a modified system of fish bone system has been developed to facilitate the natural tidal flow and survival of the tree in a total extent of 25 hectares.”
“In addition, linear planting of indigenous species of mangrove species along the edges of the canal and a stream with a total of 20,000 seedlings was carried out. Key mangrove species, including Rhizophora Mucronat, Avicennia Marina, Exocoeria Agalloch, Bruguier Cylindrical, Ceriops Decandra Communities and ensure the generation of livelihoods of community and management, ”he added.
The fish bone model allows water to achieve every corner and corner of field channels. This model has found success in earlier applications in Pichavaram.
Due to the ecological importance and long -term nature protection of this website, according to Section 26 of the Forest Act of 1882, a formal proposal to announce this area was submitted as a reserve forest. This would ensure long -term legal protection of the renewed mangrove ecosystem.
According to government estimates, mangrove coverage in Tamil Nadu is 44.94 km2 km (square km), of which 7.73 km2 km. He’s in Cuddalore. Approximately 21% of the pichavaram, which extends around Vellar and Coreoon, is occupied by water points, 27% healthy mangrove vegetation, 38% mud with sparsely grown mangroves and sand dunes occupied the rest of the area.
According to Mr. IQBal, to further strengthen local participation and protective mechanisms, steps to create a committee for mangrove villages (VMC) in Kudikad. This committee will include the local participating parties in the protection, maintenance and awareness of the ecosystem of the mangrove ecosystem.
