The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court called for a report on the progress made in an investigation of alleged fraud of real estate tax in Madurai Corporation.
The JUSTICES SM SU SU SUBRAMANIAM and Ad Maria Clete divisional bench set out after the state reported that a special investigative team (SIT) was created by the Deputy General (Madurai) Abhinav Kumar and a probe was settled.
With regard to filing, the Court ordered the authorities to report and postpone the hearing for two weeks.
Last week, the court ordered the police inspector (southern zone) and the police commissioner Madurai to create a network, headed by the IPS officer with a proven integrity to conduct the investigation.
The Court of Justice listened to a petition in the public interest given by the AIADMK Council T. Ravi (Ward 83) Madurai, who was looking for a transfer of the probe to the Central Investigation Office (CBI).
The petitioner stated that last year information about alleged fraud emerged in which several people were beneficial. Based on the complaint filed by the Commissioner of Madurai Corporation, a committee was established to reveal any inconsistencies.
Upon receipt of the Committee’s report, the Commissioner filed a complaint with the police commissioner Madurai. The fraud that occurred between 2022 and 2024 was caused by a loss of approximately 200 crore crore, claiming.
Although the complaint was filed by the Commissioner of the Company in 2024, the case was only registered in 2025, after about seven months. There was a long delay in registration of the case and measures against low -profile were taken, not real culprits, he said.
It was argued that several political persons were involved in the fraud, and on the basis of the instructions of the main minister, five zones and two chairmen, the Presidents of the Committees resigned from their positions that allowed the government to carry out free and fair investigation, the court noted.
The court noted that the fraud of this size had to be investigated by an IPS official and the probe should be monitored by higher authorities to ensure that there are no forfeiture and that no one was omitted from the action. All responsible and responsible for causing huge financial losses for corporation should be prosecuted, the court noted.
