District administrations in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet and Tirupattur are all set to reopen schools on June 4 (Thursday) with renovated classrooms.

Before the opening of the schools, a week-long exercise of renovation of the entire campuses, especially in public schools in these districts, was in full swing, with the participation of volunteers, including residents and students.

“Over Head Tanks (OHT) in the school campus were cleaned to provide quality water to students. Trees were also pruned. Fresh supplies for mid-day meals were also prepared to ensure timely food for students,” said K. Raman, a teacher.

Many schools have been modified, including removing bushes, erecting steel fences around the campus, replacing old electrical lines and water pipes with new ones. “Schools in tribal settlements are given special attention in terms of basic amenities for students and staff. We have also ensured that adequate supplies of school uniforms and books are available to the students,” said R. Premalatha, Chief Education Officer (CEO), Vellore.

A helpline with helpline numbers (04175 – 250814; 04175-253845) has been set up at Tiruvannamalai Collectorate for the public to report any lapse in compliance of safety measures by the school authorities. Special buses were also provided for the safe transportation of students.

At present, Tiruvannamalai district has a total of 2,185 schools, including 720 colleges and higher secondary schools with over 15 lakh students in classes 1 to 12. School uniforms and books are available for students in the campuses.

In Vellore, the drive to enroll students in government-run and corporate-run schools intensified during the summer vacations. Currently, Vellore Corporation has more than 300 schools with more than 5,000 teachers. Most schools have been equipped with RO drinking water systems for students. As part of the sanitation, civic workers carried out regular fogging of the premises.

Ranipet district has a total of 910 schools, including 320 colleges and higher secondary schools. The respective RTOs in these districts checked the eligibility of school vans and buses within their limits. Tirupattur district has around 330 schools from primary to higher secondary levels covering its six educational taluks including Jolarpet, Tirupattur, Nattrampallai and Madhanur.

Education officials said the Education Department has asked the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) to run more buses, especially in school zones for easy and safe commuting of students during school hours.
