India has received the fourth squadron of Russia’s S-400 air defense system, strengthening the country’s long-range air defense network. The system arrived from Russia as scheduled in May and is expected to be deployed in the operational area soon, defense sources said.
The delivery is part of a $5.43 billion deal signed between India and Russia in 2018 to acquire five regimental S-400 systems. Three S-400 squadrons have already been put into service; the fourth has now arrived after delays linked to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The remaining squadron under the original contract is expected to be delivered in 2027, officials said. Deliveries are now back on schedule.
The S-400 will be integrated with artificial intelligence decision support capabilities aimed at improving threat prioritization and target selection, senior defense officials said.
“AI-enabled targeting will help operators identify and prioritize aerial threats. All incoming targets will be displayed in the system and AI will provide recommendations based on the nature of the threat. However, the final decision on deployment will remain with the operator,” said a senior official.
The AI-powered system will help distinguish between different categories of threats, including ballistic missiles, fighter jets, drones and cruise missiles, allowing for more effective use of anti-missile missiles, officials said.
The S-400 Triumf is among the world’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile systems capable of engaging aircraft, drones and cruise missiles and ballistic missiles at longer ranges. The system forms a key pillar of India’s layered air defense architecture along both the western and northern fronts.
Officials also highlighted the operational role played by the S-400 during Operation Sindoor, with the system making a significant contribution to India’s air defense posture during the conflict. According to sources, the platform has been instrumental in countering aerial threats and has demonstrated its long-range deployment capabilities.
In addition to the Russian-origin systems, India is simultaneously seeking to develop an indigenous integrated air defense ecosystem under the broader “Sudarshan Chakra” initiative.
