The Department of Higher Education (Technical Education) has released the draft seat matrix for engineering and architecture courses in the state with 1,59,151 seats from 227 technical colleges for the academic year 2026-27.
Among them, 75,041 seats fall under the government quota (KEA), 32,769 seats under the COMED-K quota and 51,294 seats were management quota seats.
This year, a total of 5,235 places and 10 technical universities were increased in the draft matrix compared to last year. During the academic year 2025-26, a total of 1,53,916 seats were available in 217 colleges, including 72,506 government quota.
There was an increase of 500 seats in government colleges, an increase of 2,580 seats in private universities, an increase of 1,695 seats in private colleges and a marginal increase of 60 seats in deemed universities according to the matrix.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) has informed that seats in some colleges, private universities and some courses have not been included in the published seat matrix based on the recent guidelines issued by the Higher Education Department on the recommendations of the Sadagopan Committee, which expressed concern over saturation of seats in computer science and allied streams.
“The government has limited the maximum number of seats for any new college to 60 and there are some colleges that have more than 60 seats, but we have not considered the seats that have more than 60. In such cases, the institution has to submit a certificate from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the expanded seats will be added later,” KEA said. He further added that for computer science and related streams, he considers the maximum income to be 900.
KEA also clarified that for any course, if the number of participants is more than 180, even if they have seat expansion approval from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), such seats have not been included in the published seat matrix. “These seats will be added after receiving the NBA certificates from the institution,” he added.
Colleges which have enhancement this year and which will cross 900 seats have not been considered and the same will be included after submission of NBA certificate.
