Southwest Monsoon may reach AP in four days, says IMD

The Southwest Monsoon, which is likely to reach Kerala on Thursday (June 4), may reach Andhra Pradesh in the next three to four days, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Amaravati.
Last year, the southwest monsoon arrived in the state on May 26. This year too, monsoon was expected in the state around June 1, but the criteria for declaring the onset of monsoon was not met, say weather experts.
It usually takes three to four days for the monsoon to reach AP after its onset in Kerala. But in case of further delay, it may take up to seven days, said S. Karunasagar, Scientist, IMD-Amaravati.
While the conditions are favorable for the monsoon to hit the state in the next four days, it will be clear after its onset in Kerala.
Meanwhile, the state continues to reel in hot and humid weather. According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), no mandal experienced severe heat wave on Wednesday while heat wave conditions were recorded in 20 mandals. The day’s highest temperature of 44.5°C was recorded at Nandanamarella in Markapuram district.
The APSDMA has predicted severe heat waves for 46 mandals and heat waves for 79 mandals on Thursday. Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram-Manyam, Srikakulam, Alluri Sitharama Raju and Polavaram areas are likely to be affected in that order. Severe heat wave conditions are likely to prevail in more mandals on Friday.
In its monthly outlook for June, the IMD said the state may see above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures and three to four days of heat are also possible in the month. Rainfall distribution will be patchy as Rayalaseema is likely to receive normal to above normal rainfall, coastal areas and northern part of the state may experience below normal rainfall.
On Wednesday, Rajam in Vizianagaram district received a daily maximum rainfall of 32 mm, while some places in Alluri Sitharama Raju, Parvathipuram-Manyam, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Anantapur, Krishna, Chittoor, NTR experienced light to moderate showers, according to the Directorate of Economics and Statistics.
