Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has finally issued work orders to improve 75 important intersections in the city at an estimated cost of 100 crore. The project has been divided into 15 packages and suppliers are expected to complete the work over the next six months.
The Surraksha Mission – 75 project was declared in the state budget 2023-24 of the then main Minister Basavaraj Bommai, along with several other schemes that meant 75 years of Indian independence. However, the project did not take two and a half years to revive. The work finally began at selected intersections.
M. Lokesh, Chief Engineer, Road Works, Bruhhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), said the project would focus mainly on these intersections to be safe for motorists and pedestrian. “We will be repairs of geometry to make traffic more efficient, avoid accidents and ensure that the pedestrians are safe. We also look at the beautification of these intersections,” he said.
In addition to cleaning fraudsters for walkways, lanes brands, zebra transitions and other roads, they also clean neighboring shoulders to prevent floods, ramps, provide some seating and where there is space. Water fountains will help keep the air fresh and reduce pollution, the officials said.
Some of the prominent intersections selected for Surraksha – 75 intervention include KR Market, Nayandahalli Junction, Bel Circle, Tin Factory, Jalalli Cross, Summanaaalli Junction and Basaveshware Circle.
Srinivas Alavilli, Fellow, World Resources Institute (WRI), India, who worked with BBMP on Surkasha – 75, said that intersections were selected after careful study and death, especially pedestrians. “These interventions not only make design repairs, but add several features to provide safety and pedestrian comfort,” he said.
In addition, the BBMP also captured the corrections of the road geometry at the top of the underpass in the circles of Mehkri and CNR Rao, where the civic body attracts beautification, sources said.
BBMP takes a job to improve another 20 intersections using funds from the National Clean Air program (NCAP). The work is to identify the connection to be adopted for interventions within this program, the sources said.
