
The National Week of Moths (NMW) is celebrated in different parts of the country, including Bengalur, from 19 to 27 July.
According to NMW organizers, India has been a pulsating participant since 2013 and will again join this global civic scientific initiative and encourage enthusiasts, families and organizations to discover and documes the incredible diversity of the moth.
Participants throughout India can register their private or public MOTHING events on the official National Moth Week website (Nationalmothweek.org). The observation collected during these events contributes to global knowledge through an inaturalistic platform and helps to expand the understanding of the biodiversity of the moth and geographical distribution.
A public lecture has been held in Bengalur and the Foundation Nature Conservation Foundation is scheduled for the Nature Foundation and the session of the meeting scheduled for atese 21 July.
“Simply by observing and contributing through platforms such as an inaturalist, we enhance the understanding of the biodiversity of the moth and their geographical distribution, which is essential for protection efforts. We invite you all to join or host the event and become part of this global effort to celebrate these incredible creatures,” Vijay Barve, coordinator of DiversityIndia NMW team.
Pritha dey, the Country Coordinator for India and the main member of the Indianmiths community, said NMW is an incredible opportunity for people of all age groups to connect with nature and contribute to scientific research. “Moths are often misunderstood, but they are essential pollinators and an important part of the food chain. By participating you can help us learn more about these fascinating creatures directly in the backyard,” Mrs. Dey said.
It is estimated that 1.50,000 to 2,00,000 moths are estimated worldwide, which is a stunning range of colors, patterns and sizes.
The organizers said that while most are night, some species are active during the day, similar to butterflies. The bridge observation can be as simple as switching on the porch after dark or for dedicated enthusiasts using special lights and baits.
In India Indianmoths, headed by NMW celebrations in cooperation with many organizations such as Diversityindia, Inaturewatch Foundation, Titli Trust and Nature Mates Nature Club.
