Games, organized by International University Sports Federation (FISU), combine university athletes from around the world and promote not only athletic perfection, but also education, culture and global unity.
Universiade takes place every two years and contains two editions: Summer Universiade and Winter Universiade. The summer edition includes sports such as athletics, swimming, basketball and gymnastics, while winter edition organizes sports such as skiing, figure skating and ice hockey. These events provide a platform for students-sports students to compete at a high level in balance of academic obligations.
Games have a rich history dating back to 1959, when the first official Universiade took place in Italy in Turin. Since then, the competition has grown significantly and has attracted thousands of participants from more than 150 countries. It serves as a springboard for many young athletes who later represent their nations at the Olympic Games or in professional sports.
In addition to the competition, the world university games emphasize the cultural exchange and development of education. Athletes remain in the village settings, support friendships across the border and promote the values of sports and mutual respect. Each host city also includes cultural showcases and academic forums, reflecting the main mission of joining and education.
India was an active participant in Universiade, witnessing the medals of victory and representation in various fields in recent years. Games also pushed Indian universities to improve their sports infrastructure and support systems for students-sports.
